RYAT‘s recently released album Totem is stunning. Every track on the album represents a different spirit animal, which shows through her haunting yet graceful vocals. As an avant-garde electronic musician, she has recently signed to the Brainfeeder label. ‘Howl’ is currently the lead single, but there are other tracks on this album that are my personal favourites. The whole album deserves a good listen.

‘The Sicilian’ by Bonobo is still one of my favourite tracks to listen to when the sun is shining.

I’m revisiting the Imperial Tiger Orchestra‘s Mercato after they recently opened for Balkan Beat Box’s London show. While they couldn’t steal the show from BBB, their contemporary edge to Ethiopian grooves were definitely… well, groovy.

I’ve been a bit obsessed with harpist Emma Gatrill this week. Her album Chapter I will be released on May 14th via Willkommen Records.

Goat Rodeo SessionsYo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile. This album has been on my stereo almost constantly since it came out. This is string music at its best with a flare of the unpredictability of bluegrass. Having just won the Songlines Music Award for Cross-Cultural Collaboration, I’m apparently not the only one who loves this album.

The new Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars album Radio Salone has just come in for review. I’ve had the track ‘Mother In Law’ on repeat. The band was formed while the six Sierra Leonean musicians were living as refugees in the Republic of Guinea as a result of the civil war (1991-2002). Their aim was to find a place of refuge, a sense of purpose and a source of power through music.

It has been a busy week. Japanese producer DJ Krush has been a good source of background music!

I’ve been checking out British vocalist, cellist and composer Ayanna, who supported Roberto Fonseca at the Barbican earlier this week. She’s a pioneer of Black folk music, incorporating her cello, cow bell and piano. She was a brilliant live act.

We’ve had the new Amadou and Mariam album, Folila, come in for review so I’ve been listening to that. The Malian duo have moved their music forward. Check out the ‘Oh Amadou’ teaser below, featuring French rocker Bertrand Cantat:
