Interview: Stubborn Heart

An interview with Stubborn Heart

By Tim Marshall

London-based electronic duo Luca Santucci and Ben Fitzgerald formed officially as Stubborn Heart last year, but had been making music together for the last ten years. The band said that it all started to come together “when we came up with ‘Better Than This’  in 2010. We finally made something that we were proud of and that we could play to our friends without flinching.”  Three years later, the track was released as the third single from their eponymous debut album. An eclectic mix of  pulsating, heavy bass/break beat electro and northern soul, it was well-received by critics who identified dark themes such as urban isolation and unease. I asked the band whether they recognise this description of their music. “We certainly were living quite dystopian existences whilst making this album and that did seep into the music. There’s a coldness about the record that was probably a result of us both being cut off from normal day-to-day living. It’s not a lifestyle I would recommend. Although computers can often fool you into thinking that you’re not alone I wouldn’t like to marry one.”

Stubborn Heart – Better Than This (One Little Indian/ April 15 2013)

By Tim Marshall

This is the third single from London based electronic duo, Stubborn Heart, whose eponymous album was released last November to critical acclaim. The band only started performing live with the release of their album and Jonathan Tranter‘s review of their January gig suggested that they are not yet entirely comfortable outside of the studio being rather nervous and particular in their performance. However, he picked ‘Better Than This’ as the highlight of the set, and it is easy to see why they have picked it as a single release.

Villagers Announce 2013 Tour

musika

Indie folktronic Irish five-piece Villagers have announced two headline shows; May 21st in London at the Electric Brixton and  May 22nd in Paris at La Cigale.

The band kicked off their current tour two weeks ago in Sheffield and have sold out dates in the capital this week at the appropriate venue of the Village Underground in Shoreditch. However, the band are unlikely to remain subterranean for long, with their last album Awayland a number one hit in their home country and next month they play one date in Belfast in addition to four nights in the Republic.

Y La Bamba release ‘ Oh February’ EP

musika

Folk music is often unfairly maligned with associations of the foldy-roldy, real ale in the beard variety of Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention, but fortunately this couldn’t be further from the truth for the Portland based group Y La Bamba, who released their new EP Oh February on January 29, fittingly just a few days before the month begins.

The eponymous track can be found here. It opens with lovely bright guitar picking, which is soon joined by the distinctive voice of Luz Elena Mendoza and builds to a beautiful harmonised chorus. Their first album Court The Storm featured songs sung in both English and Spanish, and a mix of traditional Mexican instrumentation and modern indie folk/rock.

More about the band is available on their official site and it’s worth visiting to check out their videos and lyrics, especially for any Spanish speakers.

Check out the video below for their single ‘Juniper’, from their 2010 album Lupon:

Yeasayer – O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London, December 4 2012

By Tim Marshall

In September I reviewed Yeasayer’s latest album, Fragrant World and gave it a mixed appraisal, concluding that I could not judge it until I had seen it performed live as I was hoping to that week before it was rescheduled. It had been growing on me steadily in the interlude as a slow-burner and seeing it brought to life has made me appreciate it further as I had hoped.

The band took to their Arctic space station set as digitised voices incanted “good evening London” like a wartime propaganda announcement that had got stuck in a time continuum. Most bands I have seen recently start with a bombastic opening number, but the band opened with ‘Blue Paper’, a low-key, complex layered track that worked perfectly as an overture. This was one of several songs I had not been overly impressed with in my initial review, but hearing it live highlighted the intricacy of the production as much effort had gone intro rearranging and stripping down the songs so that they could be played without the use of backing tapes.

Clock Opera at Heaven, London, November 8th

Clock Opera – Heaven, London, November 8 2012

By Tim Marshall

We arrived near the beginning of NZCA/Lines set, an electro/R’n'B/dance three piece who sound like a mix of MGMT, Metronomy, late Radiohead and Yeasayer. Their stage set up was quite a spectacle, an array of LEDs flashed from the various space-age looking equipment which included an electronic drum pad and an extraordinarily high hat. The band were accompanied by a backdrop of hypnotic minimalist visuals which disappeared for Clock Opera, who made their entrance to the sound of a thousand ticking clocks, similar to the opening of Pink Floyd’s time before launching into their first song of the night.

My Jerusalem – Preachers

My Jerusalem – Preachers (The End Records / September 19 2012)

By Tim Marshall

Although Preachers is technically My Jerusalem’s  second record, singer songwriter Jeff Klein is the only remaining member, so it has the feel of a debut. The band are completed by guitarist/keyboardist Jon Merz, multi-instrumentalist Michael St. Clair, drummer Grant Van Amburgh and bassist Geena Spigarell who work through the genre gears of hard rock, country rock and blues. The best instrument of all though is Klein’s voice which shifts from a menacing, gravelly growl to mournful melody and catatonic shrieking.

Yeasayer – Fragrant World

Yeasayer – Fragrant World (Mute Records/ August 15 2012)

By Tim Marshall

The ‘difficult second album’, the “sophomore jinx”; call it what you will, but it remains one of the biggest clichés in music writing. Yeasayer’s Odd Blood was a brilliant follow up to their excellent debut All Hour Cymbals and both would feature in my list of the top albums of the 00′s. It is at the third time of asking, however, that the Brookyln-based three piece have come unstuck. The rather limply-titled Fragrant World is not a bad album per se, just disappointing from the standards one would expect from a band as creative as Yeasayer.

My Jerusalem To Release New Album

musika

New York singer-songwriter Jeff Klein formed My Jerusalem in 2010 and the band are set to release their second album, Preachers, this November. Their last record, the critically acclaimed debut Gone For Good, was picked up by BBC 6Music and the band performed on Marc Rileys’ show, which was their break through with a UK audience.

Deerhoof – Breakup Song

Deerhoof

Deerhoof – Breakup Song (Polyvinyl/ September 4 2012)

By Tim Marshall

For those who like to find meaning in random statistics, Deerhoof’s twelfth album released in 2012 features eleven tracks, the first of which is called ‘Breakup Songs’ on an album called Breakup Song. This title/track reversal is perhaps a playful joke on the teenage heartbreak pop record given that the San Francisco four-piece are now in their forties, and it is an album characterised by playfulness and whimsy.

However, as a big fan of their last album, Deerhoof vs Evil, I am quite disappointed with this latest offering. After half a dozen plays it has yet to make an impression on me and is missing the stand out tracks like ‘Secret Mobilization’ and ‘No one Asked to Dance’ from Deerhoof vs Evil. Some puritans, however, may feel that those tracks stray close to the middle of the road and weed out the connoisseurs from the fair-weather listeners.
