In deference to having seen DJ Shadow on Friday evening, and his imploring the ‘open minded cats to dig all the different sounds tonight’, today’s song of the day is DJ Shadow – ‘Mashin’ On The Motorway’. A more leftfield, petrol fuelled tune careering through your ears at breakneck speed that’s certainly not ‘Organ Donor’.

Taken from his second album, The Private Press, MOTM opens with a sinuous, instantly funky double bass line sampled from the David Wertman tune ‘Sunshine’. Surf guitars turn this into a retro beach party groove and the tempo is almost drum and bass, making it impossible to not get up and then get down to.

In the quirkily animated video, Lateef (“… your neighbourhood friendly speed demon…”) drops some lyrics that cause a stack of vehicular chaos. Not one to be played on a slow day on the M25 but today, NOW!
