In the spirit of throwing all my cards on the table in my inaugural Song of the Day, I’ve flaming well chosen my song of the year.

Over the course of the last two albums (the third, The Haunted Man, jumping onto record retailers’ shelves as of next Monday), Natasha Khan has weaved her tales of enigma, lust and despair together with haunting melodies. Yet they have been out-spine-tingled by this piano-led ballad. No ceremony, no pomp, no unnecessary ultra-production – this is Khan to the core. This is emotion you cannot manufacture, and has inspired me to wear my heart on my sleeve (an almost certain health risk) and admit I love it all the more for that.

“Laura, you’re more than a superstar”, the chorus tells its tragic protagonist. With efforts like these, Bat For Lashes deserves the very least as well.
