My choice for Song of the Day was chosen after listening to a beautiful live session and interview with Martha Wainwright on the Lauren Laverne show yesterday. Her new album Come Home To Mama has drawn inspiration from a particularly poignant period in her life which involved the death of her mother and the birth of her first child.

Lead single ‘Proserpina’ is a heartbreaking listen. It was in fact the last song written by Martha’s mother Kate McGarrigle, who was an accomplished solo artist in her own right. It’s an ode to her children and the eternal love that only a parent could experience and Martha does a wonderful job with it. It might just be my favourite song of hers, ever. Take a listen below:
